The average prices for both Nexium and its generic equivalent,, are $6.30 and $7.40, respectively.
Nexium, the active ingredient in, is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. But prices for other generic medications can vary dramatically.
The average retail price of Nexium is about $1.17 per pill, down from $2.16 per $100 pill earlier this month. That’s from a list of nearly $2.45 billion that includes more than 8,000 generic versions of Nexium.
Nexium, made by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, is the only drug in the class to contain the active ingredient esomeprazole. Nexium is also the only drug in the class to be approved to treat acid reflux disease, or acid-related stomach ulcers.
But for generic drugs to work, the amount of acid they release is very small. And if the drug is to be prescribed to treat heartburn, or ulcers in the stomach and other parts of the intestines, the amount of acid needed to pump down enough of the stomach to fill the esophagus must also be very small.
As a result of Nexium’s low price, the average retail price of Nexium has been growing for more than.
But there are several factors that could also contribute to the price increases.
Nexium and the generic versions of the drug are just one factor.
Nexium has lost some of its exclusivity over heartburn. But that loss could lead to generic competition that could increase prices even more.
Nexium is a new drug that combines Nexium with a drug that has the same active ingredient as omeprazole, or esomeprazole, in a single pill. The drug has no restrictions on use, but the drug could be prescribed to treat acid reflux, stomach ulcers, or heartburn.
As of September, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals had roughly 13,500 generic Nexium tablets in stock. But the company had to reduce its stock price to $1.04 to compete with AstraZeneca to fill the gap.
“This is the biggest price drop yet for Nexium,” said Michael DeLongue, an AstraZeneca spokeswoman. “The generic competition is not taking place.”
The company had previously disclosed that it was preparing to file a abbreviated new drug application for its generic version of the drug. That application will include a detailed explanation of its use to treat acid reflux disease and acid-related stomach ulcers.
That application will be submitted to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration later this year. But that plan faces mixed results.
The company is also hoping to make a generic version of Nexium available to treat heartburn and acid reflux disease in the near future.
But if AstraZeneca files the application soon, the company could lose exclusivity on the drug, and it could lose the ability to sell the drug in the United States.
“I don’t think there’s a reason to wait,” said Jim O’Brien, a Pfizer spokesman.
The drug can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
The price of Nexium may also drop with generic competition.
The generic version of Nexium, like and, could see price competition.
This isn’t the first time generic competition has occurred.
In 2012, AstraZeneca filed an abbreviated new drug application to make Nexium more affordable for patients who take acid reflux drugs. But that application was denied, and the company appealed that decision.

What is Reflux?
Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Do I get instant relief from taking a Nexium tablet?
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
How much to take• The recommended dose is one tablet a day. • Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don’t feel an improvement immediately. • You may need to take the tablets for 2 or 3 days in a row before your reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation) get better. • The treatment length is up to 14 days. • When your reflux symptoms have completely gone you should stop taking this medicine. • If your reflux symptoms get worse or do not improve after taking this medicine for 14 days in a row, you should consult a doctor. If you have persistent or longstanding, frequently recurring symptoms even after treatment with this medicine, you should contact your doctor. Taking this medicine • You can take your tablet at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach. • Swallow your tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet contains coated pellets, which stop the medicine from being broken down by the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.
Alternative method of taking this medicine• Put the tablet in a glass of still (non-fizzy) water. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Always stir the mixture just before drinking it. • To make sure that you have drunk all of the medicine, rinse the glass very well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid pieces contain the medicine – do not chew or crush them
